~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colleagues--You will no doubt remember that Nancy Dunbar convened several meetings of this group a year or two ago in the hopes of clarifying for students the landscape of intellectual and educational opportunities at Brown in the broad field of "Mind, Brain, and Behavior" (or so I remember the group was informally called). A useful map of different paths through this landscape was produced on a large spreadsheet, but my recollection is that further attempts to help students navigate this territory by (say) creating new introductory courses or consolidating existing requirements turned out not to be possible. I think the need of helping students (and their faculty advisors) understand the alternatives available to them in this area of inquiry is still pressing and important, and I would like to try a different way of addressing it. The Advising Coordinator in my office, Sheilah Coleman, has shown herself to be quite skilled at producing documents that students find useful in clarifying their curricular choices and opportunities. I would like to ask Sheilah to work with you to see if she could write such a document that would make sense to students and non-expert faculty the intellectual landscape represented by your concentrations and curricula. I would like to begin this work with a meeting in my office where we would talk together about what this project should try to achieve, what such a document might look like, and how Sheilah should do her work. She would then follow up with individual interviews with you about your concentrations and the curriculum in your field. I am writing to everyone on Nancy's mailing list, but if you are no longer the right person to be inviting to this meeting, please let me know. My assistant Barbara Sardy will be in touch with you about scheduling it. Thanks for your help. Best, Paul
Paul B. Armstrong
